Barely two weeks into the 2005 racing season, Penang based Phillip Corner has become the second expatriate trainer to quit the Malayan Racing Association circuit this year. This follows the quit decision last week of Sungei Besi based New Zealand trainer Felix Campbell, who returned home after four years in Malaysia. Corner, who previously trained in India, will relinquish his stable on February 1, after the conclusion of the four-day January Meeting in Penang. Corner came to Malaysia in 2001 and saddled 15 winners that year. But it has been downhill for the Englishman since then. Corner managed only five winners in 2002, 11 winners in 2003 and only three winners last year. He won the RM750,000 Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (Sultan of Selangor Gold Cup) with the Indian import SIMPLY NOBLE in 2003. The placerville gelding also won the Astro Wah Lai Toi Vase the same year. |
