Seven Singapore horses to compete in Dubai

SINGAPORE,  14 January 2005

DREYFUSS and SUPERIOR STAR, who finished 1-2 in last year’s Singapore Derby for champion trainer Laurie Laxon, are among seven horses who will fly the Singapore flag in the Dubai International Racing Carnival beginning next Thursday.

The others are CYRIL, EL SANTOS, LIM’S CLASSIC, LIM’S GRAND and TERFEL.

Winner of seven of his 18 career starts at Kranji, DREYFUSS (5 b.nz.g Oregon - My Amazing Grace by Siege Perilous) also finished third to ZIRNA in the 2003 Singapore Gold Cup and won the Patrons’ Bowl in the lead-up to the Derby last year.

Carrying top-weight of 59kg, DREYFUSS beat only one home in the Singapore Gold Cup last November and has not raced again since.

However, DREYFUSS and SUPERIOR STAR are being targeted at the Dubai World Cup night programme on March 26 and have two more months to prepare for the overseas stint.

SUPERIOR STAR (5 b.a.m Nothin’ Leica Dane - Musters by Pasakos), winner of five races in Perth including the Group 2 Western Australian Oaks (2,400m) anf the Group 3 Champion Filly Stales (1,600m), has scored twice in nine starts in Singapore, including the Singapore Derby Trial.

Besides the Singapore Derby, SUPERIOR STAR was also second to MAYO’S MUSIC in the Raffles Cup and has also not raced since finished 12th in the Singapore Gold Cup last November.

Already in Dubai are the Patrick Shaw trained pair of CYRIL and EL SANTOS, who have settled in under the care of fellow South African trainer Mike de Kock.

CYRIL (5 b.nz.g Oregon - Diamond Reef by English Harbour), who won three of his four starts in New Zealand, made a winning debut in Singapore last May but managed just three placings in seven starts since.

However, he last start fifth to RAUL in the Singapore Gold Cup, coming from last at the home turn, was a splendid effort which probably prompted owner Mr A L A Crabbia and Shaw to send him to Dubai.

EL SANTOS (3 ch.arg.g Roy - Slew Briosa by Slewsville), who landed unraced, has scored twice in five starts and was only beaten a neck in the Stewards’ Cup (1,400m) last November.

John Meagher’s pair of LIM’S CLASSIC and LIM’S GRAND will leave for Dubai next Thursday.

LIM’S CLASSIC (5 b.a.g Dehere - Augustine by Black Zephyr), who came to Singapore unraced, has seven wins in 22 outings and was a last start winner in December after resuming from a six-month spell.

LIM’S GRAND (4 ch/gr.nz.g Gold Brose - Shepherd’s Delight by Famous Star), a NZ$240,000 purchase at the 2002 New Zealand Ready To Run Sale, has raced 13 times for four wins, including the 2003 Juvenile Championship for two-year-olds and the past two runnings of the Paititi Gold Trophy.

Irish trainer Daniel Murphy will be represented by TERFEL (6 ch.e.g Lion Cavern - Montserrat by Aragon) who has regained his English form after 11 starts in Singapore, winning two of his last three outings.

TERFEL campaigned for three seasons in England, winning three races. He was also second in the Listed Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Newmarket 1,408m) at two and the Listed Vodafone Surrey Stakes (Epsom 2,414m) at three.

The Dubai International Racing Carnival, which will see horses from 16 countries competing, culminates with the US$6m Dubai World Cup on March 26 and offers a total of US$26m in prizemoney.
