ENEMY FIRE, ridden by Y F Leong and trained by Cecil Robert, caused a mild upset in the inaugural running of the RM200,000 Equine Capital Cup over 1400m here today. Having failed to score in the top class in several previous attempts, the seven-year-old bay Australian gelding by Strategic out of the Mister C mare Patronella surprised a few when he tracked the early leaders and then came through in a tight finish to defeat HORSE KING and KEY CHOICE. The Class 1 event is one of three races open to Singapore entries this weekend. Singapore’s GRAND CANYON, trained by Charles Leck and ridden by Cedric Segeon, could manage only fifth after being well back in the early running. Earlier, MOON MAGIC (5 br.a.g Mister Kwila - Bold Damsel by Spritely Knight) easily captured the Class 3 Open race over 1200m, with the Singapore runner OCEAN DANCER finishing last of six runners. With Singapore’s SQUIRT also unplaced in the Class 4 Open race yesterday, it means that Malaysian horses have more than held their own in the own backyard in the first cross-border races in more than six years. It remains to be seen how Malaysian horses will fare at Kranji when the Singapore Turf Club opens the Raffles Cup (1800m) to Malaysian horses at the end of next month. |
