Malaysia international this year is off

KUALA LUMPUR,  3 March 2005

The reluctance of invited countries to participate has forced the Selangor Turf Club (SLTC) to call off its inaugural Malaysia International Challenge planned for September. It is now postponed indefinitely until a major issue is addressed.

It is understood that the invited countries claim that Malaysia is not completely free of Surra, a chronic disease caused by Protozoan Trypanosoma Evansi. It is primarily a horse’s disease but it can affect a wide range of host causing wasting disease.

"For the time being, the club has postponed the International Challenge 2005 and although we’re not giving up yet on this project, it’s not expected to take off this year," SLTC Deputy Chairman Datuk Richard Cham Hak Lim told the press.

With a purse of RM2 million, the International Challenge would have been the richest and first international race staged in the country.

It was to be a discretionary handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards and only for horses which have not won a Group 1 or Group 2 race.
