Singapore debut for Mount Street

SINGAPORE,  27 January 2005

Mount Street, a certainty beaten in the NZ$474,000 New Zealand Derby last term, will be making his Singapore debut in the Class 1 - 1,200m sprint at Kranji here on Sunday.

The four-year-old brown brown New Zealand gelding by Kilimanjaro out of the Turf Ruler mare Real Trier landed in November for champion trainer Laurie Laxon and is targeted for the S$3m Singapore Airlines International Cup in May.

Passed in at NZ$62,500 (Reserve NZ$70,000) at the 2002 New Zealand Select Colts Sale, Mount Street was sent to the Takanini partnership of Colin Jillings and Richard Yuill.

After being in all his three starts at two, he progressed to in four of 11 outings at three and performed creditably in the stakes races, finishing fourth in the Listed Wellington Guineas (Trentham 1,500m), third in the Group 3 Waikato Guineas (Te Rapa 1,600m) and second in the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (Avondale 2,000m).

Partnered in the New Zealand Derby by Grant Cooksley, Mount Street clipped the heels of another runner shortly after the start and was beaten just a head by Cut The Cake (by Yamanin Vital).

Cooksley, currently riding on a MRA ticket in Malaysia, said after the race: "He was nervous about getting too close to other horses". Mount Street returned with a missing plate and a torn hoof.

Mount Street picked up another win and a placing from six starts at four before heading for Singapore.
