Penang trainers enjoy discounts

PENANG,  7 July 2005

To defray the high cost of maintenance due to costlier imports, the Penang Turf Club (PNTC) is giving a discount on purchase of fodder and vitamin supplements for race horses.

Due to the strong Australian dollar, prices of fodder and vitamins have become costly as these products are mostly imported from Australia which is one of the biggest manufacturers of the products.

Robin Rizal Tan, general manager and secretary of PNTC, said: "Effective September 1, all home-based trainers will enjoy a 20 per cent discount on purchases of all fodder and vitamin supplements from the club. This will be subject to review after a one-year period."

Tan explained: "The subsidy on the fodder and vitamin supplement purchases is part of the club's continuing effort to assist the Penang-based trainers and owners, and is also aimed at increasing the quantity and quality of horses at the club.

"With the 20 per cent discount, Penang-based trainers will not only get to enjoy the cheapest fodder in the region, which is stored in a controlled environment to maintain its freshness and quality, but will still enjoy the 75 days credit free limit currently extended to them," added Tan.

News of the discount has been well received by the Penang-based trainers. Tommy Noordin, president of the Association of West Malaysian Racehorse Trainers, said: "It (the discount) will go a long way to help owners and trainers, especially in the current economic climate."
