Three expatriates get riding permits

SINGAPORE,  29 June 2005

Frenchman Cedric Segeon, who had several stints as a visiting jockey in Malaysia for the past three months, is among three expatriate riders who have been granted freelance jockey permits by the Singapore Turf Club.

Segeon, 22, currently licensed by France Gallop, has had considerable success in the last three seasons in Macau where he finished third and fourth in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons respectively. During his stay in the former Portuguese enclave he also tasted Group success with wins in the 2003 Group 1 Macau Derby, the 2003 Group 2 Chairman’s Challenge and the 2004 Group 3 Spring Trophy.

In Malaysia, Segeon landed his first winner in April when he partnered MISS BLUES to victory in a Class 4, Div 2 - 1200m sprint at Kuala Lumpur. He also scored on CITY EMPEROR in a Class 5 - 1700m handicap for home based horses in Penang on May 29.

Segeon, who has ridden over 200 winners since 1999, has been granted a three-month licence from July 1 to September 30 and goes to scale at 53.5kg.

Two Australians who had previously ridden in Singapore will also join the riding ranks.

Aaron Spiteri, 27, currently based in Adelaide where he is sitting fourth in the 2004/2005 South Australian Metropolitan Jockeys’ Premiership, last rode in Singapore on a one-day licence in March 2004 when he partnered LIM’S GRAND in the E W BARKER TROPHY.

Since starting his career in 1998, Spiteri has ridden over 500 winners and has been granted a six-month licence from July 5 to January 5, 2006. He goes to scale at 51.5kg.

Stephen Maskiell, 42, is currently based in Tasmania where he has ridden with considerable success, having been the leading rider for seven of the last 12 years and has won every Group and Listed race in Tasmania including the Group 3 Hobart Cup on three occasions.

Maskiell, who previously rode in Singapore in 1997, has been granted a four-month licence from July 8 to November 8 and goes to scale at 53.5kg.
