Mark Du Plessis granted MRA licence

SINGAPORE,  16 March 2005

Mark Du Plessis, who has been riding in great form since he returned to the local circuit this year on a six-month visiting jockeys’ permit granted by the Singapore Turf Club, will be staying until the end of the season.

The 29-year-old Zimbabwean, who won the S$125,000 Committee's Prize on QUE EXPRESION last week, has been granted a MRA Professional Jockey Licence till the end of the year.

Du Plessis leads the Singapore jockeys' table with 15 winners and is hoping to win the premiership for the first time. However, he will not be adding to his tally for the next two Fridays as he is serving a two-day suspension for careless riding.

Formerly based in New Zealand, Du Plessis made his first appearance in Singapore in 2000, landing two winners.

In 2001, he was sixth in the table with 24 winners. The following two years, he booted home 55 and 66 winners to finish second to Saimee Jumaat in the championship.

He was the stable rider for Malcolm Thwaites when he landed the Singapore Gold Cup on ZIRNA in 2003. Last year, he was brought back for the Gold Cup weekend and scored again on RAUL for trainer Laurie Laxon.

Du Plessis is the fifth expatriate to be granted MRA licences this year after Barend Vorster, Eddie Wilkinson, Grant Cookskey (to ride in Malaysia only) and Peter Lao Weng Hong.
