Three trainers call it quits

KUALA LUMPUR,  24 November 2005

Expatriate trainers John Brink and Damien Williams have called it quits.

Brink, who took a six-month leave of absence until Oct 31, has decided not to return to the local circuit.

This is the second time the American has quit the scene. He first came to Malaysia to train in Kuala Lumpur and was an immediate success. He later moved base to Singapore and was the main trainer for the powerful Auric Stable.

But Brink unexpectedly quit and returned home, only to re-appear in Kuala Lumpur in 2003 when he saddled six winners.

He made his presence felt last year when he finished third in the table with 27 winners. But after saddling four winners early this year, he went on leave and did not return.

After four years in Malaysia, Penang based Williams packed up and left last week after he was left with only two horses in his stables. This after his main owner pulled out his entire string and placed them under different trainers.

Williams came in 2001 and saddled five winners that year. He had another four in 2002, seven in 2003 and nine last year. Ironically, he had enjoyed his best season this year, winning ten races.

Another Penang based trainer Henry Cheah Peng Lum is also throwing in his towel and will bow out on Jan 1.

Cheah is among five trainers due to meet the Malayan Racing Association committee next week to show cause why their MRA licences should be renewed for the new season in 2006.

The others are Lim Hoon Seng, Lim Kwee Huat (both based in Penang), Hoy Kee Poh (Ipoh) and Yashaiya Ahmad (Kuala Lumpur).

Seven jockeys and apprentices have also been asked to show cause. They are David Ow Yang, Vellaikannu Palanisamy, Parama V Sivan, Garnet Sharrol, apprentices Saravanan Kanappah, Martin Koh and Jason Yeoh.
