SLTC relocation plan hits a snag

KUALA LUMPUR,  4 June 2005

Selangor Turf Club's (SLTC) plan to relocate to Sungei Tinggi in Selangor has hit a snag.

Selangor senior executive councillor Datuk Andul Rahman Palil was reported to have said that SLTC's plan to build a racecourse there has been rejected by the authorities.

"Muslims and non-Muslims alike are against the idea", he was quoted as saying after closing a sporting event last week.

The decision comes as a surprise to many as the SLTC committee has said the relocation was a government directive in a written reply to questions by an ordinary member of the club.

On March 31 last year, at an Extraordinary General Meeting, members overwhelmingly approved the proposal to relocate the club to a new site in Sungei Tinggi.

The club received the mandate from members to accept Selat Makmur Sdn Bhd's offer to purchase the club's land for a total price of RM640 million.

The club had only moved to its present site in Sungei Besi from Jalan Ampang in 1993.
