TERFEL, one of two Singapore trained horses to win a race during the Dubai International Racing Festival early this year, has captured his biggest win at ‘home’ in the S$1.25m Singapore Gold Cup over 2200m at Kranji here today. The six-year-old English gelding by Lion Cavern out of the Aragon mare Montserrat proved a shade too good for the New Zealand Derby runner-up MOUNT STREET, who has yet to win in Singapore, and LIGHT OF SUCCESS, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup back in April, in the Singapore Group 1 handicap. TERFEL provided Irish trainer Daniel Murphy, who has trained with success in Macau and Malaysia, with his first big win in Singapore. He also owns the gelding. For Soo Kheng Beng, it could well turn out to be the highlight of a championship year for the jockey. He is sitting pretty at the top of the table with 62 winners, five clear of his nearest rival Saimee Jumaat who had a double today. Soo was still an apprentice when he scored his only previous classic on SUPER LUCK in the Patron Bowl in 2000. TERFEL, winner of three races in England, had a quiet start to his campaign in Singapore and it was at the tailend of last year that he started to fire with two wins. It encouraged Murphy to send him to Dubai where he started four times. On his return, he managed a win in nine starts before taking out the biggest domestic race in Singapore. Malaysian entries JERAM SPECIAL and SOLO VENTURE failed to make any impression, finishing 10th and 13th respectively. |
