Terfel finds success in
Dubai SINGAPORE, 27 February 2005 |
||
TERFEL has become the second Singapore trained
horse to win at the current Dubai International Racing Festival which will
culminate with the running of the Dubai World Cup next month.
The Daniel Murphy-trained TERFEL’s success followed that of the John Meagher-trained LIM’S CLASSIC in the US$120,000 Turffonten Stakes over 1,300m on February 3. And in the history of Singapore racing, only three locally trained horses have been successful overseas, the first being the Ivan Allan-trained COLONIAL CHIEF in the 1989 Hong Kong Invitation Cup. With the benefit of two outings in Dubai, in which he chalked up a third last time out, TERFEL triumphed in the US$110,000 Marju sponsored by Derrinstown Stud over 2,000m on the turf at the Nad Al Sheba racecourse on Friday. Ridden by John Egan, the six-year-old chestnut English gelding by Lion Cavern out of the Aragon mare Montserrat defeated the Doug Watson-trained MUTASALLIL (Richard Hills) by one-and-a-half lengths. Winner of three races in three seasons of campaign in England, TERFEL took some time to settle down in Singapore but it was his two wins last December which prompted Murphy to send him to Dubai. On the same programme last Friday, Singapore nearly had another winner but for LIM’S GRAND beaten a neck in the US$110,000 Sham sponsored by Shadwell Farm over 1,600m on the turf. Third in his Dubai debut on February 3, LIM’S GRAND, ridden by Frankie Dettori this time, found the Dhruba Delvaratnam trained WALMOOH (Pat Smullen) a shade too good. LIM’S CLASSIC, meanwhile, was a very disappointing last of nine runners in the US$120,000 The Chester International Stakes over 1,600m on the turf on Thursday night. It was his first run since his debut win in Dubai. Both LIM’S GRAND and LIM’S CLASSIC are trained by John Meagher. |
