Jason Waddell's licence cancelled

SINGAPORE,  24 November 2005

Jason Waddell has ridden his last race in Singapore. And it's a great shame that one of New Zealand's best jockeys who was having so much success at Kranji is leaving in the manner that he did. His MRA expatriate licence was cancelled on Nov 14.

Former champion New Zealand apprentice Waddell first came in July last year and in a little over five months, chalked up 25 wins to win the 2004 Singapore apprentice title, this in addition to the New Zealand title he won for the 2003/04 season. He was also seventh in the overall table with a strike rate of 17%.

Waddell was subsequently granted a six-month extension to his riding licence by the Singapore Turf Club and remained indentured to trainer Laurie Laxon until Apr 25.

He became a full-fledged jockey last May and a week later was granted an expatriate jockey's licence by the Malayan Racing Association.

But he soon ran foul of the rules of racing — twice.

Early in July, he was suspended two months for his handling of TOM HIGGS in a Kranji Stakes A vent over 1200m at Kranji on Jun 25. TOM HIGGS, who started favourite in that race, finished fifth to seven runners to WYNDAM GLORY.

Waddell later withdrew his appeal against that sentence, and that after he was suspended two months on another charge.

On Jul 12, Waddell pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct under MRA Rule 53.(b)(i) in that on Jun 17, he failed to arrive on course at the Singapore Turf Club to fulfill his riding engagements as required under the MRA Rules of Racing.

"Thereafter, in the following weeks, he misled the Stewards into believing that he had been to a doctor prior to the meeting and had obtained a medical certificate to relieve him of the six rides, when in fact this was later found to be untrue," according to the Singapore Turf Club.

Despite his absence in the last four months, he is still fifth in the 2005 Singapore table with 26 wins.
