Golden Ace bags Astro Wah Lai Toi Vase

KUALA LUMPUR,  8 October 2006

GOLDEN ACE, narrowly beaten into second place in the RM250,000 Astro Wah Lai Toi Vase last year, went one better to capture the 1400m weight-for-age sprint at Sungei Besi here today.

After beaten a neck by JERAM NEW VILLAGE (who was unplaced today), the six-year-old chest Australian gelding by Desert Prince out of the Caerleon mare Soyinca went on to win the Coronation Cup over 1600m last November.

But since then, the Prakhash Peraira trained GOLDEN ACE has started just three times and finished down the field on each occasion, the last outing being the Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy just a month ago.

It was, therefore, a surprise for many when he got up to beat JERAM SPECIAL and FREE SPIRIT in the Vase today. It was his sixth win in 19 starts.

There was to be a consolation for Gold Plus Stable and Frank Maynard, the owner and trainer of JERAM SPECIAL, when JERAM NEW VICTORY won the second leg of the SLTC Juvenile Million Challenge, with prizemoney of RM225,000, over 1400m.

In winning, the four-year-old bay Australian gelding by Tayasu Tsuyoshi out of the Don’t Say Halo mare Cherise also ended the winning run of SUPERB GENERAL who had won his last four outings.

JERAM SPECIAL defeated FREE SPIRIT in this race last year.
