Gold Arrow bags Perak Derby

GOLD ARROW stole the thunder from the much fancied MOON SHADOW and YELLOW JAMBHALA to win the RM400,000 Perak Derby over 2400m here today, giving apprentice Yudanyl Aify his first big race success.

The six-year-old bay Australian gelding by Snaadee out of Ozone Sand (by L’Enjoleur) found himself in front at the start when no runner were keen to set the pace.

Stablemate XTHEREST, who was well back of the nine-horse field early, was still on a tight hold when he surged to the front in the back straight and led into the home straight.

But GOLD ARROW regained the initiative at the 400m and was headed momentarily by MOON SHADOW at the 200m with YELLOW JAMBHALA putting in a challenge in between them.

But the Frank Maynard trained gelding, whose previous five wins were up to 1600m, fought back gamely to snatch victory by a neck. MOON SHADOW finished second and YELLOW JAMBHALA third.

The Perak Derby was the third major win in Malaysia for Maynard who saddled JERAM NEW VILLAGE to victory in both the Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy and Astro Wah Lai Toi Vase last year.

Maynard took over GOLD ARROW at the tailend of 2005 and has won twice with him this season.
