Cosmo Bulk scores a first for Japan

SINGAPORE,  14 May 2006

COSMO BULK coasted home to win from KING AND KING (not in picture)
and BOWMAN'S CROSSING.

COSMO BULK shrugged off a disappointing season in 2005 to win the S$3m Singapore Airlines International Cup at Kranji here tonight, providing Japan the first success in the Group 1 event.

Much was expected of the son of Zagreb after he ran second in both the Japanese 2000 Guineas and the Group 1 Japan Cup (behind ZENNO ROB BOY) in 2004 and was named NAR Grand Prix Horse of the Year and ’Best Thoroughbred Turf Horse’.

But he flopped badly in the Hong Kong Champions Mile and Japan Cup last year, managing just a fourth in six starts.

With jockey Fuyuki Igarashi astride, COSMO BULK tracked pacemaker VROOM VROOM from the start. FALSTAFF threw out a challenge briefly at the top of the straight but COSMO BULK soon took over and went on to score by one-and-three-quarter lengths.

KING AND KING, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup in March, came from a long way back to finish second, ahead of Hong Kong’s BOWMAN’S CROSSING, who finished also third to EPALO in this race in 2004.

“This is a great win for Japanese racing and for a NAR (National Association of Racing) horse,” said a delighted trainer Kazunori Tabe.

“Neither the horse or jockey are registered with JRA (Japan Racing Association) so when we return home we will ask the JRA if he can run in the Takarazuka Kinen Group 1 on June 10 over 2200m.

“However the owner was not able to be here tonight and we need to speak to him first when the horse returns to Japan.

“Normally he pulls hard in a race but this time he was very relaxed,” said jockey Igarashi. “He travelled so well in the middle of the race that I was very confident and when he handled the bend into the straight so well and then picked up so fast, I knew he would win.”

Singapore’s own KING AND KING ran the race of his life for trainer Steven Burridge and jockey Richard Lim.

“What a great race! “ exclaimed Burridge. “We knew he was fit and well and it was just a matter of him stepping up and he did it, we’re delighted and very happy.”

“He gave me a great ride,” added Lim. “I thought I had a chance because in the stretch he just kept coming, but beaten by a better horse.”
