Farook's debut a milestone for STAR

SINGAPORE,  6 April 2006

When apprentice J Farook weighs out for his debut ride on SUPER BEST in the Class 5 - 1000m sprint on the fibresand track tomorrow night, it will mark a significant milestone for the Singapore Turf Club (SNTC).

Farook, indentured to trainer Brian Dean and goes to scale at 48kg, will be the first graduate of the much-heralded Singapore Training Academy of Racing (STAR) programme to compete in races.

Set up more than three years ago, the STAR programme was designed by the SNTC to train newcomers to the industry, including trainers, jockeys, farriers and stable hands.

According to Peter Chadwick, Singapore Turf Club Chief Stipendiary Steward, the milestone was achieved through hard work from both the apprentices and staff at the Club, with the trainers also playing a significant role in their development.

“The STAR programme is vitally important for the development of Singaporeans into this exciting and rewarding industry” commented Chadwick. “Having watched these particular gentlemen develop from knowing nothing about horses to being competent horsemen is a satisfying experience for all concerned”.

The other two STAR graduates who have also been granted ‘B’ grade apprentice licenses by the MRA are T Farick, indentured to champion trainer Laurie Laxon, and M Airy, indentured to Michael Clements. They go to scale at 47 and 49.5 kgs respectively.
