Greg Is Great scores comeback win

Veteran galloper GREG IS GREAT seized the opportunity of meeting moderate opposition for the first time in a while to score an emphatic win in the RM100,000 Equine Capital Cup over 1400m here today.

The eight-year-old bay Australian gelding by Pricelessly out of the Cheraw mare Speech Of Praise had scored eight times previously but has failed to greet the judges since winning the MRA Cup over 1700m here in September 2004.

The Chong Keng Leong-trained GREG IS GREAT, however, has finished on board in two big races this season, including the Perak Derby (2400m) in April.

Tracking runaway pacemaker HORSE KING early, GREG IS GREAT, ridden by leading jockey Martin Wepner, shot to the lead at the home turn and immediately opened up a clear lead into the straight.

He cleared away in the run home to win comfortably from POWER OF GOLD and another veteran BABY STAR in the Class 1 event.

Former Singapore racing commentator Steven Levar registered his first success in Malaysia when PERUGINO POWER coasted home to victory in the Class 5, Div 1 - 1700m handicap.

Winner of two races in South Australia, the six-year-old chestnut Australian gelding by Perugino out of the Rory’s Jester mare Acropora failed to show up in his campaign in Singapore and was later transferred to Malaysia.

After managing five placings in his nine outings, PERUGINO POWER showed his rivals a clean pair of heels to lead all the way.
