Triple Happy for Simon Liew and wife

PENANG,  3 September 2006

TRIPLE HAPPY gave his older rivals a galloping lesson when he led most of the way to capture the RM1m Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy over 1400m here today.

The youngest and only four-year-old in the capacity field, the brown Australian gelding by Bletchley Park out of the Red Anchor mare Red Marya took command on settling down led his rivals on a merry chase.

Urged on by French jockey Cedric Cegeon, the Simon Liew trained TRIPLE HAPPY and was never challenged, winning by five lengths. It was a biggest moment yet for the husband and wife partnership of Liew and Kong Sau Leng, who owns the horse.

Singapore raider TOM HIGGS, trained by Steven Burridge, made a vain bid in the final 300m but was no match for the winner. LIANG XIN finished third in the weight-for-age contest which was open to Singapore entries for the second consecutive year.

The top three favourites, FREE SPIRIT, JERAM SPECIAL and JERAM NEW VILLAGE failed to impress. The other Singapore runner, LIM’S CLASSIC, was also disappointing.

It was TRIPLE HAPPY’s first test against the cream of the sprinters, having just earned a promotion to the top class after his victory at Ipoh in July. The A$30,000 purchase at the 2004 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale has now won six races in nine starts and was placed on the other three occasions.

Azhar Ismail, on his second day back after serving a disqualification, returned to his winning ways to score on POWER OF GOLD (6 ch.nz.g Generous - Eyes On The Prize by Lomond).

There was also joy for visiting Perth apprentice Jessica Valas who scored on FAST FLYING (5 b.a.g Distorted Humor - Miss Tatum by Snippets) in her very last ride of the meeting.
