Malaysian clubs to telecast Macau races

KUALA LUMPUR,  11 September 2006

Just a few days after the Singapore Turf Club announced that they will be taking in mid-week races from South Africa beginning this Wednesday, it was learnt that the Malaysian turf clubs will telecast 'live' weekend races from the Taipa Racecourse from next Saturday when the Macau Jockey Club starts their 2006/07 racing season.

Racegoers will be able to bet on these races on either Saturdays or Sundays when there is no 'live' telecast from Hong Kong. Macau Jockey Club holds two days of racing per week, on Tuesdays and on either Saturdays or Sundays when there is no racing in Hong Kong.

In recent years, there have been a lot of interest in racing in Macau particularly with former MRA trainer Vincent Chong and amateur rider Joseph Lau being amongst the top trainers at Taipa. They were eighth and 10th in the table last season with 39 and 35 winners respectively.

Former champion MRA trainer Malcolm Thwaites has returned home after a disappointing season with just seven winners last season.

Benny Woodworth also had successful stints there in the past two seasons, booting home 55 winners to finish fourth in the jockey's table.

Oscar Chavez is among MRA based jockeys who have ridden there in recent years.

Malaysian Tom Cheam, brother of the late jockey A K Cheam (father of apprentice Sheryl Cheam) is the Official Judge at the Macau Jockey Club.
