Records fall like ten-pins on Fibresand track

SINGAPORE,  25 August 2006

RAUL in his record-breaking run.

An amazing three records fell on the opening night’s racing on the new Fibresand track at Kranji this evening.  One of the records was later re-written and one equalled.

Racing in Singapore took a two-week break to lay the new Fibresand track and remedial work on the turf course under the guidance of track manager Ian Trevethan. The work has paid off handsomely.

In the second race of the evening, ROYAL SMILE (3 b.a.f Carry The Flag - Lucys Loot by Star Of The Magi) shaved 0.6 second of the previous best of 58.7 secds. by ARABIAN COMMANDER in 2002 over the 1000m.

This time was later equalled by FRAAR’S SALOME (5 b.a.m Fraar - Danger Girl by Citidancer) in the last race of the evening.

LUCKY SUN scored  huge upset in the Class 4 - 1100m event in a time of 1 min. 4.5 secs. which was 0.3 secs. better than the previous best set by GUNONG MAS in 2003.

The new record last just two races. RAUL (7 br.a.g Hideyoshi - Whisper To Me by Beau Sovereign), winner of seven races previously but has not tasted success since November 2004, bounced back to form to win the Open Handicap over 1100m in 1 min. 3.8 secs.

BRAVE HEART (4 br.nz.g O’Reilly - Aspects Of Love by Famous Star) registered his second win in four starts with a record-breaking time of 1 min. 10.5 secds. over 1200m. The previous record of 1 min. 11.1 secs. held by MILITARY CHIEF has stood since 2000.

The number of records set in one single meeting is a testimony that the new surface is a vast improvement from the previous one.

Mixing of synthetic fibres from the UK with a specified sand mixture from a local supply has taken place since late 2005, a total of approximately 7000 tonnes of material has been required to replace the previous Fibresand material.

“The Fibresand surface will over a period of time have up to 25 M/M specified sand distributed around and across the full surface,” said Trevethan.

“Use of the power harrows will be continued as and when required to help even out the surface plus continue to mix any large clumps of Fibresand material.

“Regular monitoring and recording of important changes in the profile and surface will be completed to help in the future.”
