Nick Ryan makes winning debut

SINGAPORE,  24 June 2006

Record-breaking Melbourne jockey Nick Ryan, 19, began his five-week Singapore stint on a winning note when he partnered LION CITY EMPEROR to victory in the Class 5 - 1400m sprint at Kranji here today.

The four-year-old chestnut New Zealand gelding by Woodman out of the Arazi mare Lolette scored back-to-back wins in mid-2005 but his form has not been inspiring since, managing just two placings in 12 starts.

But the midas touch of Ryan, who booted home a record 83 winners in the 2004/05 season to win both the Melbourne jockey’s and apprentice’s titles, immediately worked wonders on LION CITY EMPEROR as the partnership romped home by four lengths.

Alan Ng also marked his new status as a senior rider with a first-up victory on VEGAS STAR in the Restricted Maiden - 1200m sprint.

The two-year-old chestnut Australian gelding by Arena out of the Archregent mare Frogmore was making his first career start.

Ng was the top apprentice in Singapore last year with 20 wins, finishing ninth in the table overall. He rode three winners this year before he was granted a professional jockey’s licence just this week.
