Singapore increases
prizemoney

The Singapore Turf Club will increase prizemoney for the
top classes and several feature races, and introduce new ones to encourage
horse owners to invest in better horses to race at Kranji. The last general
review and adjustment of prizemoney was in 2000.
The Singapore Gold Cup will now be worth $1.35 million,
an increase of $100,000. The Singapore Derby, which is for four-year-olds,
will be worth $850,000 (up from $650,000).
And from April, races in Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4 will carry
prizemoney of $125,000, $95,000, $75,000 and $55,000 respectively. (Present
pizemoney is $100,000, $75,000, $58,000 and $48,000 respectively.)
The increase in prizemoney is aimed at encouraging owners
to buy good quality young horses. Restricted Maiden races for young unraced
imports will carry $65,000 in prizemoney from April compared with $43,000 at
present.
Similarly, Initiation Plates, Novice and Graduation races
will also carry prizemoney of $65,000 while Progress races will carry
prizemoney of $75,000 to encourage good quality young raced imports.
The total prizemoney for the Three-Year-Old Challenge and
Four-Year-Old Challenge series are now increased to $1.05 million and $1.65
million respectively.

The prizemoney for Class 5 races and Maiden races will be
reduced to $35,000. However, with the existing incentives paid under the
REWARD Scheme and the ample racing opportunities for Class 5 and Maiden
horses, owners will not lose out significantly.
Three new feature races will be introduced for younger
horses. The races are:

The two new Sprint Feature races will be held in January
and the Singapore 4YO Mile together with the Singapore Guineas (1600m) will
be held in March. Winners of both the Singapore 4YO Mile and Singapore
Guineas will qualify automatically for the Singapore Airlines International
Cup, if nominated. The new feature races and the automatic qualification for
the Singapore Airlines International Cup are once again aimed at encouraging
the importation of good quality young horses. The first editions of the
three new feature races will be in 2007.
With the revised prizemoney, the Singapore Group status
of the following five feature races are also upgraded to reflect their
higher prizemonies, growing importance and prestige:
1. Patrons’ Bowl Singapore - Group 2 to Singapore Group
1
2. Kranji Mile Singapore - Group 2 to Singapore Group 1
3. Singapore Derby Trial - Singapore Group 3 to Singapore Group 2
4. Singapore 3YO Challenge (2nd Leg) - Singapore Group 3 to Singapore Group
2
5. Singapore 3YO Challenge (3rd Leg) - Singapore Group 3 to Singapore Group
2
To complement the prizemoney increases, the conditions
for non-handicap races are also revised as indicated below. The revised
conditions will be implemented from April 2006.
These races will serve as an avenue for top quality young horses to move
to the higher classes and compete in the Feature races in a shorter time.
