Ariel Smith's licence withdrawn

SINGAPORE,  19 October 2006

The Singapore Turf Club has withdrawn the Visiting Jockey licence granted to Jockey Ariel Smith with immediate effect.

A statement from the club today said: ”Jockey Smith has shown disregard for the MRA Rules of Racing and the orders of the Racing Stewards of the Club.”

In the first race at Kranji last Saturday, the American refused to remount the horse LUCKY NINETY-NINE after he was examined at the barrier by the Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to race.

The Stipe’s Report for the day's races states: “LUCKY NINETY-NINE (A Smith) was examined at the barrier by the Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to race. It was then withdrawn by order of the Race Meeting Stewards at 1347Hrs when Jockey Smith refused to remount the horse. LUCKY NINETY-NINE was impounded for routine veterinary and analytical examination. The Veterinary Surgeon reported no apparent abnormality. Subsequently, the Stipendiary Stewards, acting under MRA Rule 23(g), ordered Jockey Smith off all his rides for the remainder of the weekend’s racing. Jockey Smith exercised his Right of Appeal against the decision and applied for a Stay of Sentence. After considering his submissions, his application for a Stay of Sentence was denied. The Race Meeting Stewards then heard his Appeals on his denial of a Stay of Sentence and the decision to order him off all his rides. After considering submissions from the Chairman of the Panel and Jockey Smith, the Race Meeting Stewards dismissed his Appeals. His deposit was forfeited.”

This was Smith’s second stint in Singapore. He booted home six winners from 39 rides. He was in good riding form prior to last weekend’s races, notching a double on NIRVANA and BABY RUNNER on Oct 6.
