Free Spirit scores easy win in Piala Emas

KUALA LUMPUR,  18 June 2006

FREE SPIRIT, who twice went down to JERAM SPECIAL in the Juvenile Million Challenge series last year, exacted some measure of revenge when he scored a runaway win in the RM1 million Piala Emas Sultan Selangor over 2000m at Sungei Besi today.

Ridden by champion jockey Saimee Jumaat, the four-year-old brown Australian gelding by Citidancer out of the Star Pak mare Star Party proved too superior for JERAM SPECIAL (4 br/blk.a.g Tayasu Tsuyoshi - Playtoss by Protos) this time around.

YELLOW JAMBHALA (4 gr/ch.a.g Magic Of Money - River Flood by Riverton) finished strongly to take third placing.

With the victory, the Chong Keng Leong-trained FREE SPIRIT emerged as the top performer in the Selangor Turf Club Triple Crown Series 2006, finishing second in the first leg, the Tunku Gold Cup over 1200m and winning the Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) last time out.

JERAM SPECIAL took the early lead when there was no pace on. His stablemate GOLD ARROW took over at the 800m and led into the home straight with JERAM SPECIAL making a move and FREE SPIRIT making it almost three in-a-line at the 500m.

FREE SPIRIT opened up in fine style in the final 200m to clear away from JERAM SPECIAL who struggled to keep pace.

Chong had a splendid afternoon, saddling three winners and spearheaded Ipoh trainers to win 11 of the 12 races on the card.
