Triple Happy and Why Be are tops

WHY BE

Top sprinters TRIPLE HAPPY and WHY BE have been named 2006 Horse Of The Year for Malaysia and Singapore respectively at a gathering of who's who of racing in the two countries here tonight.

TRIPLE HAPPY rose from a humble Class 4 to score a five-length win in the RM1m Sprint Trophy (1400m) and wound up the season winning the Pesta Pulau Pinang Cup (1200m).

Trained by Simon Liew for his wife Kong Sau Leng, the four-year-old Australian gelding by Bletchley Park out of the Red Anchor mare Red Marya has six wins, a second and a third from as many starts during the year.

Purchased by Liew for A$30,000 at the Perth Premier Yearling Sale, TRIPLE HAPPY has a lifetime record of seven wins, two seconds and two thirds in 11 outings.

He was selected ahead of CLARTON SUPER, FREE SPIRIT, GOLD ARROW, GOLDEN ACE and GOLDEN RAINBOW.

WHY BE was the overwhelming favourite to win the Singapore title after chalking up 11 wins from 12 starts last year.

His only defeat came in the Lion City Cup but prior to that he captured the MRA Cup, Kranji Sprint and Fischer Stakes (all 1200m).

Trained by Laurie Laxon for Perfectum Stable, the four-year-old Australian gelding by Success Express out of the Royal Academy mare Charybdis has a lifetime record of 17 wins, two seconds and a third from 21 starts.

WHY ME was sold for A$20,000 at the Australian Select Weanling Sale but was shipped to New Zealand where was knocked down down for a bargain price of NZ$26,000 at the Select Yearling Sale.

The other nominees for the Singapore title were ARENTI, KING AND KING, MR LINE and OUR FALSTAFF.

SUMMER FIESTA, who won his second consecutive Wira Malaysia Cup from just five starts during the year, was named the Malaysian Bred Of The Year.
