CHEVRON has emerged as a
serious contender for the Singapore Derby next month after he easily
accounted for a strong field of potential candidates in the Derby Trial over
1600m at Kranji here tonight.
Partnered by regular jockey
Ron Stewart, the Irish gelding by Medicean out of Lishaway (by Polish
Precedent) stepped up on his splendid third in the Patrons' Bowl early this
month to defeat CRUSOE, whose credentials include a second in the Queen
Elizabeth II Cup last April. Third was the Japanese bred JADE.
The favourite MY ROYAL
CAPTION, winner of the Patrons' Bowl, was a well-beaten sixth.
A winner in three starts at
the tail-end of last year, CHEVRON is much improved this season with a
hat-trick of wins in the lower classes this season.
CHEVRON is owned by retired
former Singapore and Hong Kong champion trainer Ivan Allan, who is the most
successful trainer in the Singapore Derby in days when it was an open
handicap staged over 2400m.
The Derby is now the final
leg of the Singapore four-year-old series.
