Farook disqualified one year, files appeal

SINGAPORE,  22 August 2007

Apprentice Jainullah Mohamed Farook (J Farook) was disqualified one year at the conclusion of an inquiry into the running and riding of GOLDEN TIGER at Kranji last July 29.

The Istidaad gelding, trained by Farook’s master Brian Dean, finished seventh to MORGAN in a Class 4 - 1400m sprint which was run in heavy going.

Farook, the rider of GOLDEN TIGER, in the presence of Dean, was found guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that GOLDEN TIGER was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing. The particulars of the charge are:

1. that from shortly after passing the 600m until near the 400m, he failed to attempt to improve his position, despite being instructed to do so and when in the opinion of the Stewards, it was reasonable and permissible for him to do so.

2. that he failed to ride with sufficient vigour and determination in the straight.

3. that from approaching the 200m, he failed to make contact with his horse when using his whip and therefore using it ineffectively; and

And that by these particulars, he has failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing.

Farook was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from last Monday to Tuesday, Aug 19, 2008 and was advised of his right of appeal.

Farook subsequently exercised his right of appeal against the decision of the Stipendiary Stewards and the penalty imposed on him. On application, he was granted a stay of sentence.
