FAST FLYING stepped up on
several good showings in the big races of late to capture the RM500,000
Perak Derby over 2400m here today.
Ridden by Shahrul Nizam,
the Australian five-year-old by Distorted Humor out of the Snippets mare
Miss Tatum defeated the 2005 Yang Di Pertua Negeri (Governor) Gold Cup
winner LIGHT OF SUCCESS who was racing for the first time since finishing
second in the same race last December.
FAST FLYING first came into
prominence last November when he won the Astro Charity Cup over 2000m on
this track after which he came under the care of South African trainer Kevin
Coetzee.
He was then beaten short
head-head-short head in the richest Malaysian handicap, the RM1.35m Yang Di
Pertua Negeri Gold Cup over 2200m the following month.
After a short let-up, FAST
FLYING ran an eye-catching fourth in the Selangor Gold Cup earlier this
month and he clearly benefited from the outing to win today in a field
marked by the absence of several top notch stayers and dominated by horses
getting into the handicap under-scaled at bottom weight of 50kg.
Nevertheless, it was
fitting reward for Shahrul and Coetzee who have struck up a formidable
partnership and leading in their respective tables.
