New trainer Johnny Lim Boon
Thong made a sensational start to his career when he saddled the winner of
the very first race he contested.
Singaporean Lim had two
runners in the Class 4, Div 4 - 1200m handicap and he quickly made a name
for himself with JOKER EXPRESS (5 br.nz. Sakura Seeking - Chasing Gold by
Sky Chase) greeting the judges for his second win in three starts. Lim's
other runner, MEROTAI, finished fourth.
Lim, who began his career
as a syce with trainer Charles Leck in Singapore in 1996, was not done yet.
Three races later, he sent out KIKO'S RETURN (4 b.nz.g Minardi - Joe's Girl
by Amalgam) to capture the Da Ma Cai Stakes (Class 4 - 1600m) for his maiden
win in five starts.
Lim quit Singapore for
Malaysia in 1999 to join Cecil Robert. That move finally paid off when he
was granted an assistant trainer's licence in 2004 under trainer Sennett Ho.
Prior to obtaining his full
licence last month, Lim was assistant to Tony Yeoh at Sungei Besi where he
has been granted 60 stables by the Selangor Turf Club.
