McGillivray returns to Malaysia as chief stipe

KUALA LUMPUR,  5 October 2007

A little more than a year after leaving Malaysia for South Africa, David Hugh McGillivray is returning to take over as the Chief Stipendiary Steward of the three Malaysian clubs from Nov 1.

The post is being vacated by David Fischer who is joining Macau Jockey Club in a similar capacity.

Irish-born McGillivray first began his career in South Africa in 1987 when he joined the Jockey Club of Southern Africa and became a member of the Eastern Province Stipendiary Board.

After three years, he moved to Durban to become the Senior Stipendiary Steward of the Natal Stipendiary Board. Three years later, he was promoted to Deputy Chairman.

In April 1994, McGillivray moved yet again to Johannesburg where he became Deputy Chairman of the Central Provinces Stipendiary Board and just four months later, was appointed Chairman.

The lure of the Fast East caught up with McGillivray in 1996 and that’s when he joined the Malayan Racing Association (MRA) as a stipendiary steward in Malaysia.

Three years later, he was appointed the Chief Stipendiary Steward.
In May 2003, McGillivray became Director (Racing Operations)/Professional Racing Steward until his departure for South Africa.

McGillivray said at the time: “It was a difficult decision to leave Malaysia as we really love the lifestyle here. However, this job offer came up and I felt that I needed the change.” Family consists of Malaysian wife Sui Chin and son Ciaran who is now two.
