Apprentice Nizam suspended 3 months

IPOH,  17 August 2007

Apprentice J Nizam has been suspended from riding in races for three months after the conclusion of an inquiry into the running of GRISHAM today.

The Justice Prevails gelding finished 10th, but only about four-and-a-half lengths from the winner RAINBOW SAPPHIRE, in a Class 5, Div 3 - 1100m sprint last Saturday.

Nizam, the rider of GRISHAM in the presence of acting master, trainer James Brogan, pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride this horse to the satisfaction of the Stewards in the above race.

The particulars of the charge were that after a reasonable start, when the horse was travelling well, on the bit, between the 1000m and 400m-mark, he did not do enough to keep this horse in the race and dropped back further than necessary. Thereafter, after some crowding at the 300m and again at the 100m-mark, he did not do enough to look for a clear run when there were opportunities to do so.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account several mitigating circumstances, ie. GRISHAM is a nine-year old without a win and with only mediocre form. In addition, the Stewards considered Nizam's relatively clean record and his limited race-riding experience.

After considering all evidence, Nizam was suspended from riding in races for a period of three months with effect from Monday and to expire on Nov 19, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.
