Jockey Ow Yang disqualified three years

PENANG,  17 March 2007

Jockey Ow Yang Kim Choon has been disqualified three years for his handling of KINGSTON CITY in the Class 4, Div 1 - 1200m sprint in Ipoh on March 4.

KINGSTON CITY, which won his previous start by 13 lengths, trailed the field and finished a long last in that event.

At the conclusion of the inquiry yesterday, and after considering all of the evidence including that from trainer Abdul Rahim and the starters, Ow Yang, the rider of KINGSTON CITY, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(7) for failing to ride KINGSTON CITY on its merit in the above race.

The particulars of the charge were that at the start of the race, he failed to give KINGSTON CITY sufficient rein which caused this horse to jump awkwardly to the outside with its head in the air. Thereafter he continued to restrain this horse, lost his balance and the use of his off-side stirrup iron, causing KINGSTON CITY to lose considerable ground and thus giving this horse no chance in the race.

After considering the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), the Stipendiary Stewards exercised their maximum powers on penalty and Ow Yang was disqualified for a period of three years with immediate effect from Friday, March 16 and to expire on March 15, 2010, both days inclusive. He was also fined RM50,000 and was advised of his right of appeal (12:25pm).

Ow Yang subsequently exercised his right of appeal against the severity of the sentence. The appeal hearing will be held on a date to be fixed.
