RECAST, who showed so much
promise early in his career, finally realised his potential with a
scintillating win in the S$1.35m Singapore Gold Cup in course record time over 2200m at Kranji
here today.
Ridden by Opie Bosson, the
Australian rig by Thunder Gulch out of the Marauding mare Abonnement came
from off the pace early to win drawing away by one-and-a-quarter lengths in
2 min. 15.3 secs. to
give trainer Laurie Laxon his second Gold Cup after RAUL in 2004.
For Bosson, it was the
biggest win in Singapore to date for the former top New Zealand apprentice
and champion senior rider. Weight problem forced him to take two years off
the saddle and it was only in late 2005 that he made a comeback to race
riding.
Due to his weight,
opportunities have been limited since he began a six-month riding stint in
Singapore Turf Club in Sept. Bosson had to starve for three days to make
make RECAST's allotted weight of 54kg.
RECAST landed in Singapore
in 2003 having won two of three starts as a two-year-old in Australia,
including one at Sandown. He lived up to that promise by winning three
races, including the Singapore Guineas, in 2004.
RECAST, then trained by
John Meagher, won the EW Barker Trophy in 2005 and the Kranji Mile last year
before coming under Laxon early this year.
