Roy Rogers to train in Penang

PENANG,  5 October 2007

Australian trainer Roy Bradley Rogers, 39, has joined the Penang Turf Club to fill the some of the void caused by the departure of three trainers this year.

The former Western Australian based trainer’s application for a trainer’s badge was approved by the Malayan Racing Association last month and the Penang Turf Club has granted him 30 stalls at the Batu Gantong racecourse.

Rogers will make his debut in the combined professional-amateur meeting on home track on Oct 15 with two entries, METAL KING and TULSA.

Born in June, 1968, Rogers was a jockey in his younger days and in his seven years in the saddle rode mostly for leading trainer Len Pike.

Rogers turned trainer in 1990 and has saddled about 50 winners, among his notable winners were SKIMREX (2005 ToodyayCup) and AUSSIE STRIKE (2002 Premiers Cup, 2004 Apprentices Cup). Rogers also won the 2004 Apprentices Challenge with VIE FOR VANITY and the 1994 Leinster Cup and 1995 Geraldton Cup with PAGO MAGIC.

“I would like to offer my gratitude to all the committee members of the Penang Turf Club. It has always been my dream to train in Malaysia and be based at this beautiful club. I believe it’ll be an exciting opportunity for me to use my skills as a trainer.

“I’m very passionate about horses and ready for the challenges ahead. I believe I would be able to contribute to horse-racing here,” said Rogers.
