Segeon to serve two months suspension

PENANG,  3 February 2007

French jockey Cedric Segeon will serve a two-month suspension from yesterday after he failed in his appeal against the sentence meted out to him for his handling of DYNASTY SUPER on Nov 4.

Owned and trained by KM Noordin, the Kashani gelding came from last of 12 runners at the 800m to finish fifth to CIZEN TYCOON.

At the conclusion of the inquiry on Nov 17, Segeon was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 149(a)(iii) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards in that whilst riding DYNASTY SUPER in the above race and after a bad start, at about the 900m mark, whilst racing towards the rear of the field he failed to maintain his position when there was an opportunity to do so and this caused him to be further back than he needed to be at that stage of the race. Thereafter in the home straight his whip use was weak and ineffective.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Segeon’s previous clean record and he was suspended from riding in races for a period of two months.

Jockey Segeon subsequently exercised his right of appeal and applied for a stay of sentence, which was granted.

The Penang Turf Club Racing Stewards heard the above appeal yesterday.

After considering submissions from Segeon, his counsel, App SS Vanan and the Chief Stipendiary Steward, and after considering all the evidence, the appeal was dismissed and the two months suspension was confirmed to commence with immediate effect, ie from Feb 2 and to expire on April 1, both days inclusive. Segeon’s deposit was forfeited.
