Vellaikannu disqualified one year

IPOH,  15 January 2007

Jockey Vellaikannu a/l Palanisamy has been disqualified one year for his handling of SUCCESS WINNER here last Saturday.

The four-year-old gelding by Made Of Gold was doing good work at the finish when he finished fourth to CHI in the Class 5, Premier - 1600m handicap.

At the conclusion of the inquiry today, Vellaikannu, the rider of SUCCESS WINNER, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that whist riding SUCCESS WINNER in the above race, he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that SUCCESS WINNER was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing in the race.

The particulars of the charge were that:

1. After a good start, he immediately restrained his horse and took it towards the rear of the field, which was contrary to his instructions which was to sit fourth or fifth;

2. Thereafter, between the 1300m to the 1000m, he failed to improve his position where there were opportunities to do so; and

3. After entering the home straight from about the 500m, he failed to ride with sufficient vigour and determination.

After considering the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), Vellaikannu was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from today and to expire on January 14 next year, both days inclusive. He was also fined RM20,000 and was advised of his right of appeal.

Vellaikannu subsequently exercised his right of appeal and applied for a stay of sentence, which was granted. The appeal will be held on a date to be fixed.
