Winson Liew calls it quits after 46 years

KUALA LUMPUR,  3 July 2007

Winson Liew has decided to call it quits after 46 years of involvement in the racing industry. He relinquished his licence on June 30.

Liew was a 16 year old when he became an apprentice jockey and he rode with his fair share of success. His biggest win came in the 1973 Perak Derby when he partnered the Ivan Allan-trained CHAMPAGNE II.

After more than 20 years in the saddle, he turned to training. He had one of his best seasons last year when he saddled 17 winners but he has struggled with his small team of horses this year, failing to land a winner.

Liew is the third trainer to quit the local scene in the past week.

Singapore based Irish trainer Daniel Murphy left to take up a training position in England. Gary van Breukelen quits after saddling just two winners in 18 months in what was his third, and shortest, stint on the local circuit.

Meanwhile, Penang based trainer Wong Kong Fatt has moved to Ipoh with effect from last Saturday and Prakhash Pereira is leaving Ipoh for Kuala Lumpur with effect from July 15.
