Juvenile Championship 2008 cancelled

SINGAPORE,  25 April 2008

The Singapore Turf Club (SNTC) has decided to cancel the Wednesday night race meeting scheduled on June 11 and the Juvenile Championship 2008 for two-year old horses scheduled on July 25.

SNTC said in statement these moves are necessary due to the temporary decline in the horse population at Kranji doe to the disruption of the importation of horses from Australia because of the outbreak of Equine Influenza.

“As a result of the disruption, the present horse population at Kranji is just slightly above 900 instead of the projected 1050. This has resulted in a smaller number of races and field sizes, in particular during Wednesday night race meetings. The disruption also resulted in very few two-year old horses being imported and registered compared to previous years.

“Importation of horses from Australia only resumed at the end of March 2008 and 129 horses are presently in quarantine at Horsecity at Bukit Timah and the Club’s Quarantine Centre at Neo Tiew Road. These horses will be released from quarantine in late April 2008 and will take about four to six months to be fit for racing.”

To compensate for the cancellation of the Juvenile Championship 2008, the Club will run a one-off race in the later part of 2008. This one-off race will carry the same prizemoney of $200,000 and will cater to the same group of horses that the Juvenile Championship 2008 would have catered to. The date and name of the race will be announced at a later date.
