CAPABLANCA, named after
world chess champion Jose Raul Capablanca, was himself crowned champion for
the first time when he triumphed in the Lion City Cup at Kranji tonight.
Just over 11 months ago,
the Don Baertschiger trained gelding was beaten into second place by WHY ME
in a photo finish in the 1200m weight-for-age sprint.
Since then, CAPABLANCA (Scenic - Ahava by Southern Appeal) has
gone on to win five of his seven starts before finally bagging
his first Group win in Singapore.
And he did it in style by
defeating Kranji Sprint winner LIM'S FIGHTER and the Derby runner-up WORLD
DELIGHT. WHY BE
could manage only fourth this time.
CAPABLANCA, who won all his four starts in
Western Australia before coming out here, has now won nine of his 18 starts
at Kranji.
