CHEYENNE DANCER, who capped
a great season by capturing the RM1m Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy over
1400m here today, has set his sight on the S$1m KrisFlyer Singapore Sprint
next May.
The five-year-old has
proven to be one of the top sprinters around, having accounted for some of
the best at kranji last time out and against the best in Malaysia in the
Sprint Trophy.
The weight-for-age sprint
was originally slotted for September but was washed out by rain for the
second consecutive year, but this time the Penang Turf Club decided to
re-schedule the race to today.
Ridden by Rio Burnett,
CHEYENNE DANCER (Indian Danehill - Daylight Hour by Brief Truce) quickly
took command, as he usually likes to, and led his rivals on a merry chase to
win by one and a quarter lengths from TRIPLE LUCK.
It was sweet revenge for
the Frank Maynard trained sprinter who went down second to TRIPLE LUCK in
the Tunku Gold Cup early in the season. Rank outsider MAHAU finished third
in the capacity field.
CHEYENNE DANCER began his
career in Singapore where he scored twice in eight starts, never rising to
great heights. But was immediately transformed when he moved to Malaysia,
winning his first three starts here including the Malaysia Magic Millions
Classic last year.
He has remained consistent
this season, with four wins and two seconds in seven starts. CHEYENNE DANCER
'returned' to Kranji to contest a cross-border race in October and romped to
an easy win.
And now he has given Perth
trained jockey Burnett the biggest win of his career. It's the second win in
the Sprint Trophy for Maynard who was successful with JERAM NEW VILLAGE in
2005.
