Apprentice Tan off the mark on Wu Jin

WU JIN returns to scale with Tan astride

Apprentice Tan Chee Kit broke through for his first win when he steered WU JIN (Waterford Road - Bestori by Vettori) to a runaway win in the Maiden - 1800m handicap here today.

Trained by Tan's master Simon Liew, WU JIN's best showing in 10 previous outings was a fourth two starts back. However, the colt was being tested for the first time beyond 1600m and clearly relished the longer trip to win by four lengths.

Champion jockey Azhar Ismail, who prevailed in a nail-biting finish to win the crown last year, has wasted little time to grab the lead in the table after scoring on KING'S ANGEL (Sequalo - April Light by River Of Light) and WHERE ALSO KEN (Kenvain - Anywhere by I'm In Luck).

But the rider who is making waves in the early season is apprentice Harmeet Singh Gill. He won two races last weekend, including the first race of the season in Malaysia on ARION.

Gill, who made his debut only a few months ago, followed up today with a double astride HAYWICK (I Conquer - The Red Queen by Palatable) and KIKO CLASSIC (Jade Robbery - Wings Of Grace by Dr Grace).
