Callow and Sakai get extension

SINGAPORE,  5 February 2008

Australian Noel Callow and Japanese jockey Shinobu Sakai have been granted extensions to their riding licences.

Last season’s leading rider, Callow has been granted a 12-month extension to his current contract which was due to expire on Feb 29.

The 12-month extension takes Callow, 32, through to Feb 28 next year.

Callow has been a success since landing in Singapore, riding more than 110 winners at an amazing strike-rate of around 28.86%.

He was the first jockey to crack 100 winners in a season. Predominantly a heavyweight rider, Callow is well sought after by Singapore trainers and has the uncanny knack of lifting his mount in tight finishes. He currently goes to scale at 55.5kg.

Sakai has been granted a three-month extension to his licence which will now expire on May 31.

The 35 year-old Sakai has 16 years’ experience and has ridden over 1200 winners. He finished fourth in the last two seasons in Japan’s NAR Jockey’s Premiership.

Sakai has had a slow start to his initial two-month licence, riding just the one winner from his first 41 rides, with a further eight placings.

Sakai adds another dimension to the international riding ranks currently in Singapore. He currently goes to scale at 52kg.
