An increasingly popular
rider gets a chance to continue showing his wares at Kranji while an old
familiar face makes a comeback.
Irish jockey Mark Gallagher has been granted a six-month extension to his
current Singapore riding licence. His renewed permit will run from Mar 1 to
Aug.
After a slow beginning, the 39-year-old has continued to improve his
statistics, paving the way to rising support from the leading stables. Last
season he finished eighth on the Singapore jockeys’ premiership with a final
tally of 21 wins and 43 placings from 232 rides.
Prior to riding in Singapore, Gallagher spent seven years in India, and has
also plied his trade in Ireland, England, France, America, Macau and
Malaysia. He is a winner of 37 Classic and Grade races. He currently goes to
scale at 52kg.
Australian jockey John Powell returns to Singapore early next month for
another stint. His six-month contract begins on Feb 1 and expires on Jul 31.
Powell, 37, has been a regular rider in Singapore since 1997 before riding
here continuously since April 2005 — firstly as a visiting jockey then as
stable rider for Don Baertschiger.
A thorough professional, Powell has ridden for 22 years and has been
associated with almost 1000 winners in Australia, and during successful
overseas contracts in Singapore, Macau and Mauritius. He is currently
licensed by Queensland Racing and the Macau Jockey Club.
Powell has won many Singapore feature races including the 2005 Group 1
Singapore Derby (Hello And Goodbye), 2005 Group 2 Kranji Mile (Really Good)
and 2006 Group 3 Chairman’s Trophy (Mount Street). He has always been one of
the leading riders at Kranji, finishing fifth at his last two forays. During
the 2005 Singapore season, Powell rode 25 winners and 47 placings from 194
rides while in 2006, he won 42 races and was placed 62 times from 343 rides.
He currently has a riding weight of 53kg. |
