TRIPLE LUCK, resuming after
a let-up, turned giant-killer when he slayed the favourites to win the
RM700,000 Coronation Cup over 1600m here today to give Chan Cheok Fong a big
race double.
Yesterday, the Macau jockey
partnered KELANTAN to victory in the RM300,000 Sultan Gold Vase over the
1100m straight course.
It was also the third big
win of the season for trainer Simon Liew and his wife Kong Sau Leng who owns
the horse.
TRIPLE LUCK (Akhenaton -
Casual Lies by Huntingdale) won the MRA Cup over 1200m earlier in the
season, then finished third in the Selangor Gold Cup before running unplaced
in the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor in June.
Resuming since then, TRIPLE
LUCK proved too strong for last season's winner FREE SPIRIT in the
Coronation Day today, showing no lack of fitness from the layoff. Perak Derby
winner KIKO'S RETURN, also resuming after a spell, finished third, ahead of
the 2006 winner GOLDEN ACE.
Liew and Kong's first major
win of the season came in the Tunku Gold Cup with TRIPLE HAPPY in February.
It was a wonderful day for
modest imports. Earlier in the afternoon, COLOURLAND SUPREME, who cost
NZ$10,000 as a yearling, captured the RM250,000 Astro Wah Lai Toi Charity
Cup for his sixth win in 16 starts and brought his earnings to just over
RM347,000.
Liew bought
TRIPLE LUCK at the sale in Perth for just A$15,000 and the gelding has now earned just over RM950,000 with his
seventh victory in 15 starts.
