BIG MAVERICK capped an
impressive season to win the S$350,000 E W Barker Trophy over 1400m here
today, and emerged an a top contender in next year's Singapore Derby.
The top three year old this
season with two wins and a second in the Three-Year-Old Challenger series,
BIG MAVERICK (O'Reilly - Ajfan by Woodman) came from well off the pace to
win drawing by one length, equalling the course record with a time of 1 min.
21.8 secs.
It was the seventh win in
15 starts for the New Zealand gelding who was unplaced just twice at the
start of his career last year. BIG MAVERICK will now be spelled and brought
back for next year's four-year-old series.
For Laurie Laxon, it was
his 12th group win of the season but his first in the E W Barker Trophy,
staged in honour of the late chairman of the Singapore Turf Club.
For winning jockey Saimee
Jumaat, it was yet another smashing afternoon, booting home four winners and
brought his tally to 84 for the season, 22 ahead of his closest rivals for
the championship with seven meetings left.
