Michael Freedman, the
youngest of the four Freedman brothers who have stamped their marks in
Australian racing, is heading for Singapore. The Malayan Racing Association
has granted him a licence to train at Kranji.
The Freedman brothers have a remarkable 10 wins in Australia’s three
greatest races: The Melbourne Cup (3), Caulfield Cup (3) and Golden Slipper
(4).
Michael, 39, spent some time away from the family working in his golf course
landscaping and construction business before linking back with Lee and
Anthony in mid-2006. He has been the Racing Manager at Lee Freedman’s
Markdel property for the last 18 months.
Last Saturday, Michael was the man in charge for the stable at Caulfield,
overseeing the win of HERE DE ANGELS in the Group Three Rubiton Stakes.
“I’m very excited to be heading out to Singapore,” said Michael. “From the
times I’ve been there I’ve been very impressed at where the Club has been
heading. They have world class facilities and they are very progressive in
their racing, which has been an important factor and a big attraction.”
“With my background, if I was ever going to test my wares, it was always
going to be overseas. It’s a big challenge there’s no doubt about that and
it won’t happen overnight, but I am really looking forward to starting at
Kranji in April.”
Michael, who will be bringing with him a number of Australian performed
horses with him, is married to Anna and they have three young triplets in
Jess, Sophie and Max.
Born at their parents’ thoroughbred stud in Yass, New South Wales, the
Freedman brothers moved to Melbourne in 1984 and from then have never looked
back. In 1986 they won their first Group One race with MISS CLIPPER in the
1986 SAJC Australasian Oaks at Morphettville in South Australia.
Anthony and Lee Freedman were the firsts to push into first class training
from their Melbourne base and were later joined by Michael and Richard. Some
of the great horses trained by Lee and his brothers include SUPER IMPOSE,
NATURALISM, SCHILLACI, DORIEMUS, NORTHWOOD PLUME, MANNERISM, MERLENE, MARBLE
HALLS, GOLD ACE, MAHOGANY, FLYING SPUR, COUNT CHIVAS, PARIS LANE and
KENSINGTON PALACE.
Today, Lee, Anthony and Michael run the stables whilst Richard pursues
business development opportunities whilst also enjoying a role in the media.
