Maverick Leong suspended 3 months

PENANG,  27 June 2008

Jockey Maverick Leong has been suspended three months for his handling of POWER OF LIFE in a Class 4 - 1200m sprint in Kuala Lumpur on June 15.

POWER OF LIFE (Tayasu Tsuyoshi - Panache by Jungle Boy), trained by Peter Lee, beat one home after being well in touch with the leaders early.

At the conclusion of an inquiry today, Leong pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that whilst riding POWER OF LIFE in the above race, he checked when racing on the inside of DASANCHEZ at approximately the 150m mark for no satisfactory reason and thereafter failed to ride his horse out to the end of the race.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Leong’s points of mitigation and his record. Leong was suspended from riding in races for a period of three months with immediate effect from June 27 and to expire on September 26, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.
