Just two weeks after
winning his first classic with KIKO'S RETURN in the Derak Derby, Johnny Lim,
who is into his first full season as a trainer, has done it again.
Lim capped a sensational
meeting, during which he saddled ten winners, when SHANTOU MAYOR captured
the RM600,000 Selangor Gold Cup over 1600m at Sungei Besi here today.
The Australian gelding by
Montjeu out of the Catrail mare Terlingua Light first showed his potential
when he finished second to NEW KUALA DIPANG at long odds in the Yang Di
Pertua Negeri Gold Cup last December.
SHANTOU MAYOR resumed from
a short let-up with an eye catching run over 1200m last week. That set the
stage for his second attempt in the Selangor Gold Cup (he finished down the
field last year) and to complete the cast, Lim called up Kranji based French
jockey Eric Legrix, who only last week won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on
TRIGGER EXPRESS.
Legrix, who enjoyed so much
success in Hong Kong and Macau in recent years, rode a superb race to bring
SHANTOU MAYOR home three quarters of a length ahead of the multiple classic
winner FREE SPIRIT (Citidancer - Star Party by Star Pak) who had won this
race in 2006.
TRIPLE LUCK (Akhenaton -
Casual Lies by Hungtingdale), winner of the MRA Cup in Penang last month,
finished third in the capacity field.
SHANTOU MAYOR raced seven
times for two wins at Belmont in Australia before coming out here and
today's win was his third in 14 starts in Malaysia.
