FREE SPIRIT, as expected,
accounted for a small field of horses to win the RM250,000 Astro Wah Lai Toi
Vase over 1800m at Sungei Besi here today.
The Class 1 weight-for-age
event attracted just nine entries and with one course scratching, only eight
horses faced the starter.
Multiple classic winner
FREE SPIRIT (Citidancer - Star Party by Lomond), ridden by Azhar Ismail,
proved too strong for his rivals to register his 12th win in 29 starts.
Trainer Johnny Lim wound up
another smashing meeting with three more winners today, bring his tally to
nine for the meeting.
But Lim's afternoon was
spoilt somewhat by the withdrawal in Singapore of KIKO'S RETURN from the
cross-border race, the S$500,000 Panasonic Kranji Mile after samples taken
from the gelding on arrival in Singapore indicated the presence of a
prohibited substance. The leading trainer in Malaysia had high hopes of a
good showing by the Perak Derby winner and now he will face an inquiry and
possible sanction.
Lim had already been fined
this season after two of his horses returned positive swabs in Malaysia.
